Reader: At Passover we drink wine (or grape juice) many times through out the meal. We say the blessing over the first glass now.

What does the parsley and salt water represent?

It is a mixture of positive and negative, the contrasting elements serve to remind us that life is often a confusing mixture of joy and sorrow, of bitter endings and sweet new beginnings.  It is not our goal to eliminate the negative experiences and pretend that life is all sweetness and happiness.  That is a futile task and finally dishonest.  Rather our goal is to rejoice in the fact that God works in all the circumstances of life, just as he heard the cries of slaves and brought deliverance.

We break the middle matzah spiriting away a part of the tribes of Israel to be lost until found at the end of proceedings.  What does this feel like, to rip at a part of our Jewish souls to leave them in hiding?

Ma Neeshtana ha-laila ha-zeh meekol ha-laylot? Sheh-bichol ha-laylot anoo ochleem chametz oo-matzah. Halailah hazeh chametz oomatz. Sheh-bi'chol ha-laylot anoo ochleem sheh-ar yerakot. Ha-lailah hazeh maror.

Sheh-bi'chol ha-laylot ayn anoo mat-bee- leen afeeloo pa-am echad. Ha-laila hazeh sh'tay pi-ameem. Sheh- bi'chol ha-laylot anoo ochleem bayn yoshveen oo-bayn misoobeen. Ha-laila hazeh koolanoo misooveen.

Why is this night of Passover different from all other nights of the year? On all other nights, we eat either leavened or unleavened bread. Why on this night do we eat only matzah? On all other nights, we eat vegetables of all kinds. Why on this night must we eat bitter herbs? On all other nights, we do not dip vegetables even once. Why on this night do we dip twice greens into salt water and bitter herbs into sweet charoset? On all other nights, everyone sits up straight at the table. Why on this night do we recline and eat at leisure?

Asking questions is an important part of the Seder. Encourage everyone at the table to ask not just the questions listed in the book, but whatever question comes to mind during the Seder. The Seder is designed for distraction, digression, and discussion. So, if you don’t finish the whole thing tonight...there’s always tomorrow, or next year! What would be your four questions?

Traditionally, The Four Sons (or Children) include a wise son, a wicked (or rebellious) son, a simple son and one who does not even know enough to ask. Each of the first three ask questions about the Seder.

Wise:   "Explain all this to me - what are my responsibilities?"

Wicked:  "What has all this nonsense you are babbling about got to do with me?"

Simple:  "What IS all this anyway?"

The fourth is silent - requiring the adults to be proactive in providing an explanation of the Seder proceedings.

Some say that The Four Children is a metaphor for four different attitudes toward tradition, toward belonging and toward being active or passive in the face of injustice. Some say it is about stages of life, from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood (and, potentially, back again toward old age).

We take the uppermost Matzah and break it into pieces and distribute it to each participant at our Seder.

We now make and eat Maror and Charoset Sandwiches.

We make delicious sandwiches by putting marror and charoset in the matzah. In my family the day before we have the seder we make charoset all day. I eat more then i make

Now the kids all go look for the afikoman. When the afikoman is found we will eat it as a dessert. It is obligated to eat one small piece of it.

In this part of the seder, we thank G-d for our meal. Basically, its the Beercat Hamazon. Thank you for our delicious meal.

We will pour a third cup of wine. I know, a lot of liquids. Feel free to get up and go to the bathroom if needed. We drink the third cup to toast G-d. I'd explain why we should toast him, but I think you know by now.

In every generation, we all should feel as though we ourselves had gone forth from Egypt, as it is written: “And you shall explain to your child on that day, it is because of what God did for me when, I, myself, went forth from Egypt.” (Exodus 13:8)

We end our Passover Seder by saying in unison:

May slavery give way to freedom.
May hate give way to love.
May ignorance give way to wisdom.
May despair give way to hope.
Next year, at this time, may everyone, everywhere, be free!
